Barry Kauler is still actively developing his lightweight Quirky Linux operating system, a sister project of Puppy Linux, and he just announced earlier today, April 21, 2016, the release of Quirky Linux 8.0.
Dubbed simply “Xerus,” Quirky Linux 8.0 launches today with many great new features, among which we can mention Linux kernel 4.4.7 LTS, SeaMonkey 2.40 Internet suite, BluePup GUI management for Bluetooth, as well as support for booting the ISO image on UEFI-based machines.
There’s also a YASSM GUI to manage Samba, along with the YouTubeDL GUI for downloading YouTube videos. InkscapeLite received various bug fixes, there’s now daemon management in QuickSetup, and several new and improved applications and utilities.
“This is codenamed “Xerus”, as it has binary compatibility with Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit package repositories. This means that Quirky is able to install DEB packages from these repositories,” reads today’s announcement. “Other than that, Quirky is in no way similar to Ubuntu!”
Users can install DEB package from the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS repos
Best of all, Quirky Linux 8.0 ships with binary compatibility with the recently released Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, thus allowing users to install various packages in the DEB file format from the main software repositories of the Ubuntu Linux operating system.
As usual with any new release of the Quirky Linux distribution, Barry Kauler managed to squash a lot of the bugs reported by users since the previous stable release, as well as to add a multitude of under-the-hood improvements. You can download Quirky Linux 8.0 right now via our website, where you’ll find a 64-bit Live ISO image that can be used as is, without the need to install anything on your computer.
