Ex-Kubuntu maintainer Jonathan Riddell announced the upgrade of the KDE Neon base packages from Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) to the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) branch.
The developer introduced the KDE Neon project to the Linux community at the end of January, during the FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Software Developers’ European Meeting) 2016 event, which was welcomed in particular by those who love having the latest KDE technologies on top of an Ubuntu Linux base.
The KDE Neon project is primarily designed as a set of software repositories maintained by a team of skillful developers who previously worked on the Kubuntu Linux operating system, promising to offer users the latest KDE Plasma, KDE Applications, and KDE Frameworks releases as soon as they’re available upstream.
Now based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
As the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS approaches its final week of development and it is now in Final Freeze stage, the KDE Neon devs thought that it will be a great move to upgrade the base packages to the upcoming release. Therefore, if you have KDE Neon installed on your Ubuntu 15.10 system, you can start upgrading to 16.04 LTS as we speak.
“When we started the only practical version to use at the start was 15.10 so our packages have been built using that. But with 16.04LTS due out next week it’s time to move to a solid foundation where we expect to stay for the next couple of years,” said Jonathan Riddell in the announcement.
Please note that the KDE Neon developers do not provide support for the upgrade process from Ubuntu 15.10 to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, so you are on your own. To install KDE Neon on top of your Ubuntu 16.04 LTS base, you only need to run the set of commands listed below in the Terminal app.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install neon-desktop
sudo apt full-upgrade
Then, you’ll need to open the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neon.list file in a text editor (e.g. Gedit) and make sure that the line “deb http://archive.neon.kde.org/dev/unstable wily main” is in place. If so, start the upgrade process by running the following command in the terminal emulator.
do-release-upgrade
Alternatively, you can download a pre-build ISO image of KDE Neon.
